In this weekly column, we talk to the men and women who are leading India in their field, and get a glimpse of how they work and which gadgets they're dreaming about. Deep Kalra, founder of MakeMyTrip, tells us what devices he can't do without, and how technology has changed the way he works.
Describe your technology setup - what computer/ phone/ tablet/ camera/ gaming console/ other gadgets do you use?
I use a HP desktop... one in office and one in my home office. I prefer that to a laptop for long period of use and it also has better posture. For travel and meetings, I use a Samsung ultrabook, which I love. I also have an iPad for casual reading, browsing at home and travel. It is great for iBooks and presentations, and I use it for all our investor roadshows... I've stopped handing out 'books' thanks to the iPad. Love it for its battery life but it is not great for heavy typing. That's where a laptop scores. Aside from that I have an iPhone 5 (not S). Happy with its camera. Don't carry a dedicated camera even on a holiday. But my wife does use an SLR, which I hate to lug! I also have a Kindle and an iPod... an ancient model.
What are three apps (mobile/ tablet or PC/ Mac) you couldn't live without?
Flipboard, Stocks (from iPhone... preloaded), CricInfo (thought it has become infuriatingly slow and quite sad to use during IPL) and MakeMyTrip. All on iPhone.
What is one gadget (other than your phone) you never travel without?
Samsung ultrabook and Kindle
What is your dream gadget/ technology setup?
A wearable that can double up as a fully functional smart-phone... Or a iPad that can fold open and become a large-screen laptop with a full-keyboard.
How has technology changed the way in which you work?
Well, MakeMyTrip would not be in existence without technology / the Internet!
