No One's Seen These Videos, Heard These Songs, or Backed These Projects

Sites that allow users to upload content directly have created Internet sensations and surfaced music, videos and many more things that would have never been seen by anyone at all. Of course, that's also responsible for something like Psy's Gangnam Style video getting over two billion views and becoming a party staple. However, for every video that got a billion views, there were probably a million videos that got zero views. In fact, there's a lot of content on the Internet that will never be seen, and with an ever increasing torrent of uploads, this is only going to get worse.

The Internet is a beautiful place though, and you've got entire websites that are dedicated to finding entries that failed to get traction on the Internet, across a range of different websites. Take a look at these sites to see proof of the fact that "if you build it, they will come" is needlessly optimistic.

Kickended
Open the Kickended website and it looks like you're visiting any Kickstarter project page - that's actually exactly what you're doing. The site simply loads one random project every time you visit, but the caveat is that each of these projects is already closed. What's more, these projects failed to find a single backer. You can click on Random to load a new project, or Archive to see the full list of projects. The list is oddly compelling and it can be a little hard to understand why some projects make money while others get no attention whatsoever - the Potato Salad Kickstarter actually made over $50,000.

While there are some equally optimistic projects on the site, such as a macaroni salad Kickstarter, based on the number of music-related projects on Kickended, it looks like Kickstarter either has too many people putting up projects to fund their new music, or it's just not a place to raise funds to record your next song.

Forgotify
Spotify hasn't launched its service in India yet, so if you're not quite familiar with what it does, it's essentially a music streaming app similar to Gaana, Saavn and Wynk. Unlike the Indian sites, which are still largely building their catalogue and therefore focusing almost entirely on well-known music, Spotify has a wider range of songs and it includes a lot of tracks from singers and bands you've never heard of. This also means that Spotify has a huge collection of music that never gets heard.

The Forgotify website wants to solve this problem. It randomly plays songs without requiring you to sign into or even have an account with Spotify, and keeps loading songs that have never been listened to on Spotify before. On the website, it notes that around 20 percent, or over four million songs on Spotify have never been played even once, so it could take Forgotify a little time to actually complete its mission, particularly as new songs still keep getting added to Spotify. In the meantime though, you can definitely use the site to find obscure music and show off just how cool and off the beaten track you are.

PetitTube
On YouTube, songs get played millions of times, and popular channels can make millions in ad revenue - people speculate that Flappy Bird became a hit after popular YouTuber PewDiePie made a video complaining about how hard the game is. And the less said about Gangnam Style and What Does the Fox Say the better.

Not everyone gets the same level of attention though - given the frighteningly high number of videos that get uploaded to YouTube every single day, it's not really a surprise that there are quite a few which have absolutely zero views. On PetitTube, you can finally see them.

Go to the site and it starts autoplaying YouTube videos that have zero views - you can pause a video but you can't skip to the next/ previous video - it keeps playing and once it's gone, it's got one view, so that video is gone forever. The site is honestly hypnotic because it is so random; in a ten minute session, we caught a video demonstrating the features of a car, a video of a dog pooping on a bed, a video of a baby looking blankly at the camera, and a school basketball game. Honestly, we're most surprised about the last one, because shouldn't the families of the kids in the game have at least been forced to watch it once?
