FIFA 19 and Star Wars Battlefront 2 publisher EA may have revealed the lifetime to date sales of the Xbox One. In the company's recent earnings call it stated there are 103 million PS4 and Xbox One consoles sold as of December 31, 2017. While Sony has publicly announced that it has sold over 73.6 million PS4 consoles, it would hold to reason that Microsoft has sold 29.4 million Xbox Ones in that time frame. Barring the early days of the Xbox One, Microsoft has refused to divulge Xbox One sales figures, preferring to focus on engagement or time spent by gamers on the Xbox One or Xbox Live app on Windows 10.
With 29.4 million Xbox Ones sold versus 73.6 million PS4s, Sony is outselling Microsoft globally by 2.5:1. In parts of Asia, like India, the difference is much larger. Industry insiders estimate eight to 10 PS4s are sold for every Xbox One, making it a one horse race. More so when PC hardware sales aren't what they used to be thanks to Bitcoin mining and the rising price of PC games.
That said, EA's outlook for 2018 estimates the PS4 and Xbox One install base to hit 130 million with the Nintendo Switch suggested to reach 30 million in the same time frame.
Previously, Microsoft confirmed that Xbox One sales are up 15 percent year on year. A heartening sign when you consider that Xbox One exclusives have been few and far between.
“Today, we’re witnessing a record-setting number of players, playing at record levels, and engaging in new ways. Xbox Live players are up 13 percent and Xbox One sales are up 15 percent over the same period last year, but that’s not all. We’ve seen more than 600,000 friendships forged with the Looking For Group feature and there are now more than 1.2 million Clubs on Xbox Live,”wrote Mike Nichols, CMO for Gaming at Microsoft in a post on the official Xbox website entitled ‘A Record-Setting Road to E3’.
