Microsoft will reportedly be opening up its Xbox One apps platform to everyone this summer, letting them develop Universal Windows apps for the gaming console. The Redmond-based tech firm is planning to allow the influx of more apps by the end of this year, specifically November for the general public. The details of the whole plan will reportedly be revealed at Microsoft's Build developer conference in April.

Sources have told The Verge that Microsoft might also release an SDK for developers that will enable them to convert a retail Xbox One into a developer kit. The SDK preview is tipped to be published in May this year, followed by a summer launch. The SDK will also enable playing of apps in the background while performing other tasks on the console.

It is worth noting that Microsoft currently restricts Xbox One app development to select groups of app developers. However, after the proposed programme, the platform will be open to all. Microsoft is also said to be planning to allow developers to use Beta apps to test within the community before making it live.

The sources however, have not mentioned anything about the app development of Kinect for Xbox One. Microsoft recently let app developers access Kinect. Some developers reported that the performance was disappointing. It is yet to be clarified as to how Microsoft will use Universal apps with Kinect.

The firm last week commenced enhancing the social aspects of gaming in preparation of cross-platform, multiplayer gaming coming to Windows 10 and Xbox One. Gamers can now find and make more friends with the addition of a "Suggested Friends" section, view their activity feed and "people to watch" section for popular video makers and live-streamers and more.
