At the Game Developers Conference 2015 (GDC 2015), Sony released more details on Project Morpheus - the company's VR headset for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) at its four-hour-long event.

The company announced that Project Morpheus will be available early 2016. No pricing details were announced just yet. But of interest were the upgraded specifications of the prototype being displayed at GDC 2015. Shu Yoshida, Sony Worldwide Studios president told the audience at GDC 2015 that the new Project Morpheus sports a 120Hz refresh rate, key display update and a new 5.7-inch OLED RGB display with a 1920xRGBx1080 pixel full-HD resolution.

According to Yoshida, visual fidelity would be improved over due to low persistence and removal of motion blur from the earlier LCD variants.

In addition to this, the headset will have nine LED trackers, allowing for 100-degree field of view and 360-degree tracking. All of these additions make it one of the more capable virtual reality headsets slated to hit the market and it will be interesting to see how Oculus, HTC, and the others respond.

Furthermore, the company announced that the PS4 has sold 20.2 million units to date, up from the 18.5 million figure it had reported sold in January.

"We are so grateful for the enormous support from PlayStation fans worldwide, and we are truly humbled that gamers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play," SCE CEO Andrew House said in a statement.

"We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver unique and interactive entertainment experiences powered by the network and the PS4 system's deep social capabilities."
