Rockstar Games' upcoming open-world adventure Red Dead Redemption 2 may force users to sign up for a Rockstar Games Social Club account before playing the game. According to an email from the developer's customer support team posted on popular gaming forum ResetEra, Red Dead Redemption 2 requires a one-time connection to the Internet for would be players to create or log into a Rockstar Games Social Club account. The Rockstar Games Social Club is, as the name suggests, a social network service (and digital rights management tool) for games from the developer such as GTA V, Max Payne 3, and now, Red Dead Redemption 2.
"I would like to inform you that you will be able to play on your PS4 Pro and reading your previous query, you will need one-time Internet connection while signing into Social Club to login to the game. Then only you will be able to move forward to gameplay session," an email from Rockstar Games' customer support reads.
While earlier Rockstar Games used Social Club, it wasn't mandatory. This time around this doesn't seem to be the case. Though it it will be interesting to see if Rockstar plans to address this outside of its support channels. Given that the service has had its fair share of hackers, perhaps Rockstar Games is confident of its security particularly with Red Dead Redemption 2 on the way.
The same ResetEra user also confirmed that that Red Dead Redemption 2 can be played on PS4 at least, without an extra download.
"We would like to inform you that you can keep the pre-order as Red Dead Redemption 2 will be fully functional and playable from the disc on PS4," an email from Rockstar Games' support team reads. It's unclear if this is the case with the Xbox One version of the game at the moment. Nonetheless, with it out on October 26 we'll know for sure soon enough.
