Activision announced that Awakening, the first of four downloadable content (DLC) map packs for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, will hit the PS4 on February 2 and later on PC and Xbox One. If you were expecting to play them on the PS3 or Xbox 360, this will not be possible. Unfortunately, along with Awakening's announcement came a caveat that it won't be making it to last generation consoles.

It was bad enough that the game's single-player mode was omitted from the PS3 and Xbox 360, leaving owners of older consoles with multiplayer and zombie modes, but the lack of DLC support for multiplayer is appalling. Even more so when Activision stated during financial earnings report for the third quarter of 2015 that three-year-old Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has nearly 12 million monthly active users. To put that into perspective, that's double the combined player base of both Battlefield: Hardline and Battlefield 4. Staggering for a game that's just on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, and not even on the PS4 and Xbox One.

At the time, the company also said that Call of Duty has recorded double digit revenue due to high sales of its back catalogue (older games like Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare) and their related micro-transactions known as Supply Drops.

"Activision Publishing's Call of Duty franchise year-to-date non-GAAP revenues increased by a double-digit percentage year-over-year due to strong catalog sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, both for full game and Supply Drops."
