The Nintendo Switch has sold close to 15 million units since its launch in March last year. Nintendo revealed this, along with other sales figures during its financial year 2017 nine month earnings report.
14.86 million Nintendo Switch consoles have been sold until December 31, 2017. In addition to this Super Mario Odyssey sold 9.07 million units in just two months from its release. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 7.33 million units while Splatoon 2 sold 4.91 million units.
Furthermore, Nintendo has claimed its digital download sales have been brisk, increasing by 87 percent on a year-on-year basis. Also of note, the Nintendo 3DS has seen strong sales despite the Nintendo Switch launch.
"Nintendo 3DS hardware sales did not weaken after the launch of Nintendo Switch. In fact, sales grew during the holiday season in the US. Sales volume was firm in other regions as well, with the total reaching 5.86 million units (9% decrease on a year-on-year basis). For the Nintendo 3DS software, sales of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, released in November, have grown to 7.17 million units, but overall software sales declined to 31.25 million units (33% decrease on a year-on-year basis)," the company said in a prepared statement.
Also, smartphone game revenue from titles like Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem Heroes has seen a 172 percent increase on a year-on-year basis with Nintendo planning to increase engagement by focussing "on operations that encourage more consumers to continue to enjoy playing the applications that they have downloaded."
With the likes of Bayonetta 3, Kirby Star Allies, and other Nintendo titles on the way, year two of the Nintendo Switch seems to be robust for many a fan. How Nintendo plan to sustain momentum and engagement with live services and its much awaited online service though, remains to be seen.
