Halo Online Free-to-Play Multiplayer Launched for PC

The last time we had a Halo game on PC it was Halo: Spartan Assault, a top-down shooter much unlike the traditional first-person person shooters (FPS) that the series is known for. It seems that Microsoft's seminal FPS series is making a return on PC as Halo Online, albeit only for Russia as a free-to-play multiplayer game. There is no campaign either but a basic story outline that has players donning the role of Spartan soldiers on a secret space installation.

"Halo Online is a learning opportunity for us as we explore ways to welcome new fans to the "Halo" universe. We're excited to release a "Halo" multiplayer-only PC experience tailored for Russian gamers," a post on the official Halo website reads.

The game is running on a modified version of the Halo 3 engine, which according to Microsoft should let it run on low-end PCs. The developers on this are Saber Interactive and Innova Systems who have partnered with Halo 4 and Halo 5-maker 343 Industries.

Right now there are no plans to bring it to the Xbox One as the company claims it's being built ground up for PC. However we won't be surprised if it does make it to the console what with its architecture being similar to most PCs.

However don't expect it to launch outside of Russia any-time soon.

"Right now our focus is on learning as much as we can from the closed beta period in Russia. Theoretically, any expansion outside of Russia would have to go through region-specific changes to address player expectations," the post further reads.
