Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) has had an unprecedented run of success since its debut in 2013 on the PS3 and Xbox 360. A year later it hit the PS4 and Xbox One. This was followed by a superlative PC port. Thanks to its fantastic single-player campaign and steady flow of content to its multiplayer mode, it's now made more money than any other entertainment product ever. GTA V has made around $6 billion since its release in September 2013. This means GTA V has made more money than any book, film, record or video game ever released, and shows no signs of stopping.

Keep in mind, it's sold less than Minecraft which has sold 144 million units, though it has raked in more revenue. This is due to it being a more expensive game and the micro-transaction-fuelled GTA Online mode.

“Since its launch in 2013, GTA V has sold 90 million units, putting its total haul for publisher Take-Two Interactive in the neighborhood of $6 billion,” Doug Creutz, an analyst for Cowen told MarketWatch. “Far above the success of blockbuster movies like Star Wars or Gone With The Wind, which both collected more than $3 billion, adjusted for inflation. Even taking into account DVD and streaming sales would not put the biggest movie blockbusters in GTA V’s neighborhood.”

Previously it was suggested that GTA 6 could see a 2022 release date

According to a report, Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) may take place in two locations — Vice City and South America. While the former is Rockstar’s take on Miami, players will go to South America for a few missions. The game is being referred to at Rockstar as Project Americas.

In addition to this, GTA 6 may, for the first time, include a female protagonist as one of it leads. Though there’s no confirmation if you’ll be able to control multiple characters like you could in GTA V.

But don’t expect to play GTA 6 anytime soon. The game is slated to be available around 2022. If so, it could possibly signal the end of the PS4 and Xbox One with GTA 6 being their collective swan song as well as it being re-released for the next wave of consoles from Sony and Microsoft as well as the PC.

At the moment, GTA developer Rockstar is working on Red Dead Redemption 2 that's out on October 26, 2018.
