PS4 owners don’t have to wait for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). The 100-player battle royale game may be exclusive to the Xbox One and PC this year but that hasn’t stopped other games on the PS4 from picking up the slack. Cartoony survival shooter Fortnite, from the creators of the original Gears of War trilogy, Epic Games will feature a new mode called Fortnite Battle Royale - which will also be making it to the PC and Xbox One versions of the game as well.
“We are excited to announce a new mode officially coming to Fortnite players on September 26: Fortnite Battle Royale. 100 players. One giant map. A battle bus. Fortnite building skills and destructible environments are combined with intense PvP combat. The last commander standing wins,” a post on Epic Games’ website reads.
The Fortnite Battle Royale mode is available for public testing before it hits a wider audience.
“Just open the game and select Battle Royale. We expect the servers will probably break and there will be other crashes and bugs during the Public Test,” the post continues.
Furthermore, Epic Games is open about the influence of PUBG on Fortnite, going as far as to mention it by name.
“We love Battle Royale games like PUBG and thought Fortnite would make a great foundation for our own version,” the developer claims.
Its just a matter of time before other games and game creators jump on the battle royale bandwagon. Much like the Moba and open-world genres of recent years, we won’t be surprised to see this genre be the next bubble for many a developer and publisher.
