One of the biggest draws of Fallout 4 and Bethesda’s soon to be released Skyrim Special Edition is mods. Also known as modifications - these user generated pieces of content add a tremendous amount of replayability to the base game when you’re done with its main storyline. So much so that many a PC gamer prefers playing these games on PC for mod support alone.

However with the PS4 and Xbox One, mod support has made its way to consoles. Well, at least the Xbox One. For awhile Bethesda has been working with Sony to bring mods to the PS4. Now the company has confirmed that the efforts have met a brick wall in the form of Sony itself.

“After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition,” a post on Bethesda’s website reads.

“Like you, we are disappointed by Sony’s decision given the considerable time and effort we have put into this project, and the amount of time our fans have waited for mod support to arrive. We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience. However, until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available. We will provide an update if and when this situation changes.”

Although the statement says PS4 and not PS4 Pro, safe to say it affects the latter as well considering it shares the same architecture. With the numerous mixed messages during and after the PlayStation Meeting, the lack of mod support does come as a perplexing move. More so considering that Sony considers PC gaming to be a threat to its consoles.
