PS4 Pro Launches Today: Price, Features, What's New, and Everything Else You Need to Know

After almost a year’s worth of rumours stemming from the Game Developers Conference, to an official reveal at Sony’s PlayStation Meeting, the PS4 Pro is finally available for purchase. Here’s everything you need to know about the most powerful video game console that's currently available.

What is the PS4 Pro?
It is a faster version of the PS4 - this generation’s most popular console. The PS4 Pro has been built with support for gaming at 4K resolution, high dynamic range (HDR), enhanced VR experiences on the PS VR, and of course, higher frame-rates.

PS4 Pro Price
The console will cost what the PS4 was at launch - $399 (approximately Rs. 26,500).

Is the PS4 Pro coming to India?
There’s no clarity as to when the PS4 Pro would hit the shelves. If we were to take a guess, given Sony India’s actions in the past, we’d peg it for a January release at Rs. 39,990. It occupies the $399 price - which is what the PS4 was at launch. This translated to a Rs. 39,990 price. It will be interesting to see if foreign exchange fluctuations result in a higher price though.

This is not all. Many more titles will receive PS4 Pro optimisations before the year is up.

“In addition to the titles listed above, more than 45 games will be optimized for PS4 Pro by the end of the year, including Watch Dogs 2, Killing Floor 2, The Last Guardian, and Final Fantasy XV — with the likes of Nioh, Resident Evil 7 biohazard, and For Honor to follow in early 2017,” writes Sony’s Fred Dutton. “Further to that, all first party software launched in 2017 and beyond, including Gravity Rush 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone, and Gran Turismo Sport, will enjoy the benefits of the world’s most powerful console.”

Does the PS4 Pro make the PS4 obsolete?
No. This is something Sony has been adamant about even before announcing the PS4 Pro officially.

In conversation with Gameswelt TV, Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios insisted that your PS4 will not be obsolete when its beefier iterative variant hits the shelves.

"PS4 is PS4, new high-end PS4 [PS4 Pro] is still PS4, so you know the life-cycle is not going to be shorter," Yoshida said.

This should come as a relief for many an existing PS4 owner and those still looking to buy the 'regular' PS4, what with Sony having a wealth of bundles available. It's also a smart move considering over 40 million PS4s have been sold, so the last thing Sony wants to do is anger existing users.

Does the PS4 Pro play 4K Blu-ray?
Unlike the Xbox One S, it does not. Sony claims that this is because the PS4 Pro is “primarily for gaming.” Streaming services like Netflix work at 4K though.

It’s an odd state of affairs for Sony. The company is championing some of the latest advancements in tech such as VR, HDR, and Ultra HD/ 4K resolution. At the same time, it’s cordoning off some of these from the physical format that has, at this point in time, the best user experience.

Nonetheless, if Sony chose the right optical drive, this could be alleviated with a firmware update. Right now, though it’s a perplexing decision from a company that claims to have consumer interests at heart.

What you get when you buy a PS4 Pro
There’s an HDMI cable, a power plug that’s similar to what the original Xbox One (not Xbox One S) used, a Micro-USB cable (not USB Type-C) that many Android smartphones ship with, and Sony’s standard headset which in our experience, you should replace with something more substantial.

There’s a Quick Start Guide, and a leaflet for Horizon Zero Dawn. And in case you were wondering, yes, it does ship with the revamped DualShock 4 controller we’ve seen with the PS4 Slim. The light bar on it has been modified so you can see what colour is emanating from it while playing, without having to tilt it.

Also, you can allow for it to relay button presses via USB connection, making it ideal for games that require split second response times, such as Street Fighter V. The new DualShock 4 works with older PS4s as well.
