Litecoin was created just a short while after Bitcoin, as a response to some of the criticisms levelled against the latter cryptocurrency. It is designed to be much more efficient, and this also allows it to offer far cheaper transactions than Bitcoin.
But despite that, it also shares a lot of similarities, as the two are peer-to-peer open-source cryptocurrencies. In technological terms, the two are very similar, although LTC has a supply limit of 84 million, compared to 21 million for Bitcoin.
The greater efficiency of Litecoin is important because the amount of energy required to mine Bitcoin only continues to rise, and more efficient alternatives could be very important for the environment. Litecoin was created by former Google engineer Charlie Lee.
