Augur was launched in 2018 and is built on the Ethereum blockchain. Augur uses smart contracts that can be deployed on Ethereum, and can even settle payments in ETH. It acts as Blockchain verification for real world events, which is called a "decentralised oracle".
This means Augur can be used as a betting platform; users can pledge to the blockchain and receive payouts when they make correct predictions. Augur's Market Maker allows people to make pledges on questions like "will Pfizer's covid vaccine be the first to receive FDA authorisation", and the upcoming sportsbook feature will allow people to place wagers on sporting events. What makes this attractive to users is that Augur is fully decentralised, and does not take a cut on any of the transactions, unlike a normal betting exchange.
