The Tender Bar is a coming-of-age drama based on William Monahan’s memoir titled The Departed.
An 11-year-old (J.R. Daniel Ranieri) and his mother (Lily Rabe) are now living in her childhood home on Long Island, after escaping his abusive DJ father (Max Martini).
There, his uncle Charlie (Ben Affleck) runs the Dickens Bar, which is frequented by the locals regularly. In the absence of a paternal figure, Charlie takes it upon himself to guide and support JR, making room for several warm moments of bonding over.
The rest of the film revolves around the impact of this relationship on JR, him seeking paternal support from a few other patrons at the bar, and JR's life through childhood and teenage.
