A loving husband, two adorable kids, a gorgeous apartment in the Upper Westside of Manhattan, and a wardrobe that could put any fashionista to shame — welcome to the perfect life of Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan).
But Midge isn’t any other housewife from 1958; she is confident, witty, curious, and unapologetically herself. This is precisely why she objects when her husband Joel (Michael Zegen) — who is a generic executive at a firm — decides to borrow a few jokes from popular comedians during his open mic gig at a dingy bar in the Downtown called Gaslight.
A small argument turns into a brawl and a shocking revelation by Joel that he is cheating on Midge with his secretary Penny (Holly Curran). Enraged Midge drinks her anguish in a bottle of Kosher wine, and heads straight to the Gaslight bar. She gets to the stage — totally drunk — bashes about her devastated marriage, makes the audience laugh till their stomachs hurt, and flashes the randy bar.
While Midge was blabbing about her life onstage, she catches the attention of the emcee Susie Myerson (Alex Borstein) — she never liked Joel — who finds the potential of a successful comedienne in Midge. Susan heads to the police station and gets Midge bailed — who in turn, bails out another controversial comedian of that time: Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby).
Thus, kickstarts the hilarious journey of a woman taking to comedy in an era that saw them best suited for baking a cake. The period-comedy drama has been tremendously popular across waters and bagged many awards including Emmys, and Golden Globe Awards.
