Thappad is a drama film that takes a dig at ingrained misogyny in marriages. It shares a striking similarity with the popular Australian series titled The Slap, which itself is inspired by a novel of the same title by Christos Tsiolkas. The story begins with a happy couple- Amrita and Vikram (Tapsee Pannu, Pavail Gulati) planning a party to celebrate Vikram's upcoming promotion and them moving away to London. During the party, Vikram discovers that his boss’s relative is being given the promotion instead, he losses his temper and breaks into a bitter fight with him. When Amrita tries to cool him off, she slaps him in front of everyone. Humiliated by his gesture, Amrita starts reconsidering the dynamics of their relationship and begins to recall numerous small incidences in which she was wronged by Vikram. She decides to file for a divorce, inviting judgements from society as well as both their families. Her unexpected pregnancy adds further doses of drama to the already ongoing series of family interventions and courtroom scenarios.
