Nandini (Karisma Kapoor), a carefree girl, falls in love with Shekhar (Sanjay Kapoor), and the duo soon have a son, Raja (Jai Gidwani). Shekhar learns about his family being in trouble and soon plans to visit India.
A series of unfortunate events take place, and Nandini gets stuck in the problems of patriarchal society and the violent ideologies of her father-in-law, Narasimha (Nana Patekar). Nandini's struggles to escape from the clutches of feudal gang wars form the rest of the plot.
Based on the real-life story of Betty Mahmoody, this escape tale is a remake of the Telugu film Anthapuram (1998).
