Scam 1992 tells the story of Harshad Mehta, the stockbroker who became infamous for his financial crimes—primarily his involvement in the 1992 Indian Securities Scam. The show is based on the book The Scam by journalist Sucheta Dala, who was also one of the first persons to blow the whistle on Mehta. After Mehta’s expose and his arrest, the Bombay Stock Exchange crashed, hurting the savings of numerous people. Mehta’s manipulations in the stock market also brought to light the many loopholes in the Indian banking system and the BSE’s transaction system, which were later filled with new rules. Mehta was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment and he died of a heart attack in 2001.
