Westworld season two will debut in spring 2018, HBO revealed at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour on Wednesday. Expect it to arrive sometime in April, since it allows the show to participate in the 2018 Emmy eligibility period (June 1, 2017 – May 30, 2018) by airing at least half the season before the cut-off.
This comes on the heels of a trailer released at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, which provided a glimpse at what to expect from the upcoming season of Westworld.
Created by husband-wife duo Jonathan Nolan (The Dark Knight, Person of Interest) and Lisa Joy (Burn Notice), and based on Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton's 1973 film of the same name, Westworld is set in a futuristic Wild West-themed amusement park, where high-paying members of the society can act out role-play fantasies with lifelike android robots, without any fear of retaliation.
The series' first season – consisting of 10 episodes – aired October through December last year, after delays during production were necessitated since Nolan and Joy had to finish the scripts. Upon completion, Nolan had revealed that production on the second season wouldn't begin for some time.
Principal photography began earlier this month, after Katja Herbers (The Leftovers) was added to the cast as a series regular. Much of the first season cast - Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Luke Hemsworth, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Jimmi Simpson, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Ben Barnes, Simon Quarterman, Angela Sarafyan, and Clifton Collins Jr. - is expected to return.
Nolan and Joy will continue to serve as executive producers, alongside J.J. Abrams, Athena Wickham, Roberto Patino, Richard Lewis and Ben Stephenson.
