Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for its second Lego spinoff movie – The Lego Ninjago Movie – which features the toy company’s Ninjago lineup, and will be directed by Charlie Bean.
The story takes place in the world of Ninjago, with the inter-titles in the new trailer stating the central conflict: “In a far away land, threatened by darkness, defended by honour, the forces of good and evil are related.” Yep, that’s right – Lego Ninjago will revolve around the literal father-son relationship between the hero protagonist, Lloyd Garmadon (Dave Franco), and the main villain, Lord Garmadon (Justin Theroux).
With the father threatening to “level cities, and attack innocent people”, as Kumail Nanjiani’s Jay puts it in a darkly humorous fashion, Lloyd must team up with five other ninjas – Michael Peña as Kai, Fred Armisen as Cole, Zach Woods as Zane, Abbi Jacobson as Nya, and Nanjiani as Jay – and train as a group under Master Wu (Jackie Chan) to defeat the evil.
The rest of the trailer brings that blend of self-aware humour, interesting song cues, and Lego animation that made The Lego Movie such a hit with everyone, except the Oscars which snubbed the film. When Garmadon and his son get into an argument over the intended pronunciation of Lloyd, the trailer bursts forth with Taylor Swift’s 2014 hit Bad Blood.
Ninjago may not carry the same clout as the other Lego spinoff releasing next week – The Lego Batman Movie – but it does have recognition among younger fans, thanks to the on-going TV series Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, which has been running for seven seasons at this point.
The Lego Ninjago Movie rolls into theatres on September 22, 2017.
