Amazon Prime Video India has announced a new series with award-winning Indian composer A.R. Rahman called ‘Harmony with A.R. Rahman’, which will premiere next week on Independence Day, August 15. Alongside, Amazon has also released the first trailer for the five-episode music-based variety series, which involves Rahman “striving to bring alive the (almost) forgotten musical traditions of India”.
The new trailer for Harmony with A.R. Rahman opens with a scenic, birds-eye view of a low-lying city, before Rahman chimes in what the series is about: “Music should not be limited to one community or one country. I think it should be accessible to everyone.”
We see glimpses of people playing instruments from across India – the new series has been shot in Maharashtra, Kerala, Sikkim, and Manipur among other states – with Rahman talking and jamming with them at times. Some of the artists who will feature on the show include Baha'un-din Dagar, Sajith Vijayan, Lourembam Bedabati Devi, and Mickma Tshering Lepcha.
Here’s the official description of Harmony with A.R. Rahman from Amazon India:
“‘Harmony with A.R. Rahman’ takes you on a journey of India’s rich musical heritage while discovering the harmony of traditions and modern sounds like you've never heard before! Experience the hidden art of instruments and vocal traditions that form the soul of their region, learn how they are crafted, and delve into their legacy.”
“A blend of tradition with modern sounds – that is Harmony with me A.R. Rahman,” the composer concludes at the end. Rahman has won several awards for his work in the last three decades, including six National Film Awards, two Oscars, two Grammys, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA. He was made a recipient of India’s third-highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan, in 2010.
Harmony with A.R. Rahman has been produced by Chennai-based Kavithalayaa Productions – founded by film director K. Balachander in 1981 – which has been behind leading Tamil productions such as Sindhu Bhairavi (1985), Roja (1992), and Muthu (1995). And that’s why the show is being labelled as a ‘Prime Video Exclusive’ rather than ‘Prime Original’, which differentiates between shows acquired by Amazon and those produced by Amazon itself.
All five episodes of Harmony with A.R. Rahman will begin streaming August 15 on Amazon Prime Video in India and across the world.
