Lost in Space is a reimagined take on the 1965 sci-fi television show of the same title, which in turn was based on a popular 1812 novel, The Swiss Family Robinson.
It is 2046, nearly two years after humanity was pushed under a severe threat, with the Earth being in turmoil ever since. As a part of the ongoing colonisation of a new plant called Alpha Centauri, the Robison family is selected for the interplanetary mission.
This modern dysfunctional family includes father and soldier John Robinson (Toby Stephens), mother and brilliant aerospace engineer Maureen Robinson (Parker), daughters Judy (Taylor Russel) and Penny (Mina Sundwall), and youngest son Will (Maxwell Jenkins).
After Jupiter 2 — the spaceship carrying Robinson family — meets an unfortunate accident, they are forced to crash land on an alien planet. With limited resources at hand and unknown dangers lined up one after the other, the Robinson family must tread carefully to survive and escape.

Back in the 1960s, the original Star Trek series from Gene Roddenberry overlapped for two years with the original Lost in Space from Irwin Allen. Though both shows were set in space, they were opposites tonally: Trek was the more cerebral one of the two, because Allen's show left its adventure roots early on for the campy style that had worked wonders for the Adam West-starrer Batman series. Lost in Space saw more success then, but that's not how it panned out in the long run, as everyone knows. Five decades later, on the heels of Trek getting its sixth series, Lost in Space is back to overlap once again, although this time it's got the same tone as its counterpart, Star Trek: Discovery.
