As the temperature starts to go up in April, you’ll likely want to spend more time indoors, where you’ve got climate control, thanks to the wonders of air conditioning. Netflix wants to capitalise on that, as evinced by the line-up it has prepared for the new month.

On the originals front, Netflix is ramping up its movie portfolio. Keegan-Michael Key and Jake Johnson star in Joe Swanberg’s comedy Win It All; Adam Sandler co-produces and stars in showbiz mockumentary Sandy Wexler; Nicholas Hoult and Henry Cavill are American soldiers in war movie Sand Castle; Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays a disgraced former cop in Small Crimes; the documentary Casting JonBenet looks at unsolved murder of a six-year-old girl; and Spike Lee directs writer/ actor Roger Guenveur Smith in a one-man stage show Rodney King, which looks at the events prior to the 1992 LA riots.

There’s still a lot of new original shows as well. Dear White People is an adaptation of the hit Justin Simien film set in an Ivy League college, by Simien himself; Girlboss, from Pitch Perfect writer Kay Cannon is a half-hour comedy based on Sophia Amoruso’s best-selling book; Bill Nye Saves the World is a new talk show from a science perspective; and Las Chicas del Cable (Cable Girls) is the first Netflix original from Spain, about four female phone operators in the 1920s.

Part of the returning TV roster: the second half of Baz Luhrmann's music-infused drama The Get Down’s season one; and Rashida Jones scripts and directs another mini-series on the porn industry, in Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On.

Unfortunately, one of the most highly anticipated original additions – the revival of cult series Mystery Science Theater 3000, returning after two decades and with a new cast heckling B-movies – won’t be available in India.

Moving to acquisitions, while the tendency to pad up the content portfolio with largely unknown documentaries hasn’t gone away for Netflix, it’s easily forgiven given the number of movies Netflix has brought on board in both comedy and drama section during April, including Wes Anderson’s superb animated comedy Fantastic Mr. Fox, and the 1985 sci-fi drama Brazil, which stars Robert De Niro and Jonathan Pryce.

With that, here are our five picks for April 2017 that you should watch out for, and the full list of movies and TV shows coming to Netflix India after that.

Louis CK: 2017 / April 4
As part of his deal with Netflix, comedian/ writer/ actor Louis C.K. returns to the stage for the first of two stand-up comedy specials, simply titled ‘2017’. Filmed in Washington D.C., the Emmy-winner will touch upon the concept of “enduring love”, the ethics and morals involved with giving drugs to your dogs, and a whole lot more.

Fight Club (1999) / April 1
When David Fincher’s seminal post-modern work, starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, opened in theatres back in 1999, it largely failed both commercially and critically. The film has since been regarded as a cult success, thanks to the rise in popularity ever since, receiving praise for its acting, themes – anti-consumerism, anti-materialism, et cetera – and moral ambiguity.

L.A. Confidential (1997) / April 1
Set in 1950s Los Angeles, Curtis Hanson’s Oscar-winning neo-noir crime drama remains one of the best films in its genre. Loosely based on a book of the same name, it followed three LAPD officers – played by Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, and Guy Pearce – as they investigated a murder that had links to police corruption, and Hollywood celebrity.

Once Upon a Time in America (1984) / April 1
Sergio Leone’s brooding masterpiece – with Robert De Niro at its centre – follows Jewish gangsters in New York City between 1920 and 1970, conveying its story mostly via flashbacks. It was the last film Leone made before his death in 1989, and is generally regarded as one of the greatest gangster movies of all time. The only gripe possibly being its length, at 3 hours and 49 minutes.

Heat (1995) / April 1
Al Pacino and Robert De Niro delivered fantastic performances on the opposite side of the law in this riveting crime drama from Michael Mann, which traces the aftermath of a robbery slightly gone awry. Pacino is hot on their trail, as De Niro and his crew go for one last big payday. The ending may not stick for some, but it’s still engrossing throughout.
