Over the weekend, Avengers: Infinity War crossed The Avengers to become Marvel’s highest-grossing film of all-time worldwide. Meanwhile, in an interview with BBC, Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige said that they have plans to bring Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan into the fold after Captain Marvel in 2019.
On Monday, Netflix announced that Lost in Space would get a second season, and that it had acquired a horror anthology series from Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro, called 10 After Midnight. On Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporter brought word that Fast and Furious had hired a new writer Daniel Casey for its ninth instalment, making him the first new writer for the franchise since 2006.
On Wednesday, another report from THR said that Marvel had tapped writing duo Matthew and Ryan Firpo, who made a big splash on the 2017 Black List, to develop an Eternals movie. The Eternals are a race of cosmic beings who were created by the Celestials; Star-Lord’s father Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a Celestial.
Later that day, we got a full-length trailer for Mission: Impossible – Fallout, starring Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg, Michelle Monaghan, and Rebecca Ferguson. It hits theatres July 27. And as per a new report, Amazon’s Lord of the Rings prequel series will follow a young Aragorn, the character played by Viggo Mortensen in the films.
That’s all the entertainment news for this week. Welcome back to The Weekend Chill, your one-stop destination for what to watch, play, or listen to this weekend. Here are the best picks:
Movies:
Deadpool 2
Set two years after the first film, everyone’s favourite fast-talking potty-mouthed is back, with more allies and enemies than before. The sequel follows Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds, also a co-writer this time) forming a team of mutants called X-Force to protect a young, pyrokinetic mutant named Russell (Julian Dennison, from Hunt for the Wilderpeople) from a time-travelling cybernetic mutant named Cable (Josh Brolin).
Deadpool 2 Succeeds Because It Understands the Character
Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, and Stefan Kapičić reprise their roles as Deadpool’s girlfriend Vanessa, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and Colossus, respectively. Deadpool 2 also stars Zazie Beetz (Atlanta) as Domino, whose mutant ability is to manipulate luck, in addition to cameo appearances from Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Bill Skarsgård (It), Lewis Tan (Iron Fist), and Rob Delaney (Catastrophe).
Deadpool 2 has been praised by critics, including this one. The film understands what makes the character likeable and fun – his fourth-wall-breaking and mannerisms – and doubles down on it. That said, it does have its share of problems: tropes, stereotypes, side-lining LGBT characters, and generic action for the most part. Indian audiences will be happy to know the film isn’t badly censored like the first one.

Blue Planet II: One Ocean & The Deep
A year after the ground-breaking Planet Earth II, BBC and David Attenborough returned with Blue Planet II in November last year, giving us a sequel to the 16-year-old original exploration of life in the oceans, that had been four years in the making. Thanks to newer technology, it has been able to capture wildlife behaviour that wouldn’t have been possible back then.
Filming for Blue Planet II took place in a total of 39 countries, with the crew spending 6,000 hours below the surface of water. After post-production, BBC released seven hour-long episodes that explored the polar ice caps, coral atolls, coastlines, and the deepest trenches of the globe. Though Sony BBC Earth had planned to release the series on TV in India in mid-2018, it’s now going with a different option.
The first two episodes of Blue Planet II – One Ocean, and The Deep – have been reedited to make a feature-length documentary, which is being released in PVR Cinemas across India. Nature documentaries don’t come much better than Blue Planet II, and we can’t think of better ways to experience it than on the big screen in theatres.

Another quiet week on the streaming front. The only big additions on Netflix are WALL-E and Iron Man 3, both of which were already available on Hotstar. Check out our monthly guide for more options.
Video games:
Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition
Nintendo continues to bring Wii U titles over to the Switch, and this time it’s one of the best-sellers. The ‘Definitive Edition’ includes all the content and DLC from the Wii U and the 3DS releases in 2014 and 2016 respectively, in addition to new costumes for Link and Zelda that are based on critically-acclaimed and massively popular The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
As the name says, Hyrule Warriors has the setting and characters from The Legend of Zelda franchise, and mixes that with the hack-and-slash gameplay of Dynasty Warriors. You get to play as Link, Zelda, Midna, Skull Kid and 25 more characters, while everything else is the same: a main campaign, plus free, adventure, and challenge modes.
Reviews have been positive, calling it a good port that offers much more stable performance, and better local co-op, though critics weren't pleased with the lack of new content for returning players.

Dragon’s Crown Pro
Made for PS3 and PS Vita in 2013, 2D action RPG Dragon’s Crown got an enhanced port for the PS4 earlier this week, taking you back into a fantastical medieval world of swords and sorcery, “packed with labyrinthine dungeons to explore, vile monstrosities to smite, and nearly endless online adventure”, as the official description reads.
The game lets you pick from six different classes: the Amazon, the Dwarf, the Elf, the Fighter, the Sorceress, and the Wizard. Advantages and disadvantages of some are fairly obvious; the Fighter is a melee warrior, and the Sorceress is good at ranged attacks. Dragon’s Crown Pro can be played with four friends locally and online, and you can even call upon computer allies.
In our review of the game, we praised the polished gameplay, great visuals (it has 4K support on the PS4 Pro), and the distinct class and play styles. You can also cross-play across older systems, and have the option to carry over old saves. The only downside is the steep price, especially if you already own the previous version of the game.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux
Continuing the week’s trend of remasters, the 2010 fourth entry in the Shin Megami Tensei – Strange Journey – inspired by John Carpenter’s 1982 film The Thing received an enhanced port for the Nintendo 3DS. It’s set in Antarctica, the player-character is part of a United Nations response team that’s investigating an anomaly known as Schwarzwelt, a spatial distortion full of demons that’s threatening to engulf the Earth.
The ‘Redux’ version of the game boasts of new story content, additional endings, a new dungeon to explore, and more. And there are several quality-of-life changes as well, including a massive increase of save slots. In our review of the game, we loved that we could now save the game anywhere, in addition to its existing pros: a dark storyline and great combat.
Other critics have noted that Strange Journey Redux is a more accessible version of the demanding original, though it’s still not a casual game considering the number of hours you’ll need to complete it; finishing in 50 hours is considered fast.
