June was a busy month with a number of highly anticipated releases. For one, Netflix brought its Cannes feature Okja to its 100 million members in June. Usually, you’d have to wait at least a year to catch a festival film. While that was the buzziest of the lot, June also saw the return of Orange is the New Black, plus a new show about 80s women wrestling called GLOW. If you like shows devoted to rich female characters, which there can be so few of, you’ll love both those shows.
Now, as scattered showers turn into downpours across India in July, Netflix has new reasons for you to stay indoors. The third seasons of Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul, and ITV crime drama Broadchurch will be available in their entirety on the service in July.
On the original series front, you’ve Jason Bateman-starrer crime-thriller Ozark, where a financial advisor secretly relocates his family to an Ozarks resort community after getting chased by a drug cartel. Then there’s Friends from College, a comedy about the very thing from Nicholas Stoller (Neigbors, Forgetting Sarah Marshall). Rounding that up is animated series Castlevania, based on the video game of the same name.
Moving onto original films, Netflix will be releasing two titles in July: a comedy-drama To the Bone, starring Keanu Reeves as an unconventional doctor, and Lily Collins as a 20-year-old anorexic girl; and rom-com The Incredible Jessica James, which premiered at Sundance earlier in the year to better than average reviews.
On the original documentary front, you’ve Chasing Coral, which presents visual evidence of how climate change is wrecking coral reefs across the globe. In Daughters of Destiny, Oscar-winner Vanessa Roth looks at the lives of impoverished young Indians as they strive for a better future. And in between, July will see a second season of Last Chance U, which follows college football in the US.
That leaves original stand-up comedy specials, which includes the first Indian female comic on Netflix, in Aditi Mittal: Things They Wouldn’t Let Me Say. Alongside, Ari Shaffir and Joe Mande will also have their specials released in July. And in a new twist, Netflix has an upcoming stand-up series coming in July, simply called The Standups.
With that, here are our three picks for July 2017 that you should watch out for, and the full list of movies and TV shows coming to Netflix India after that.
Paddington (2014) / July 1
With a sequel on its way this year, it’s the perfect time to watch (or re-watch) the original animated romp about a lost bear who gets taken in by a family, while being chased by some mystery fellows. The bear is called Paddington because that’s the station in London he’s found at. Hilarious from start to finish, Paddington is the perfect movie for the entire family.
Broadchurch: Season 3 / July 1
A detective crime drama set in a small English coastal town, Broadchurch made waves in its first year by delivering a season packed with stellar writing and acting, powered by the likes of David Tennant and Olivia Colman. The third season – which is also the final – aired in the UK earlier this year to solid reviews from most critics.
The Infiltrator (2016) / July 1
Based on the autobiography of US Customs special agent Robert Mazur who went undercover as a corrupt businessman in the 1980s to bust Pablo Escobar’s money laundering business, The Infiltrator stars Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) as Mazur, alongside John Leguizamo, Diane Kruger, and Benjamin Bratt. Thanks to a powerful cast and its gripping fact-based story, the film is good enough.
