Dear Comrades! is a historical drama based on the Novocherkassk massacre that happened in 1996 in the U.S.S.R— picturised from the point of view of a communist party official whose factory worker daughter goes missing.
It is U.S.S.R.’s Novocherkassk town of 1962. The working class is worried to death about the skyrocketing food prices and the production quota has recently increased at the city’s electric locomotive factory. The workers are planning a massive strike that the authorities have smelled of.
Lyuda (Juliya Vysotskaya) is a Communist Party functionary and a city official who recently served as a battlefield nurse during the Second World War and thus has a strong inclination towards communism. During one of the official meetings regarding the possibility of a strike, she suggests strict enforcement of the law.
What follows next is an open fire on the group of unarmed workers protesting in the city. Lyuda’s factory worker daughter — Svetka (Yulia Burova) — goes missing, and she desperately searches for her daughter amidst the chaos.
The film also touches upon the U.S.S.R.’s villainous attempt at erasing this horrific event from the pages of history, how the blood on roads couldn't be cleaned and was hidden with a new layer of asphalt, and the healthcare workers were made to sign a non-disclosure agreement.
