Ameya Rao Gaikwad (Atul Kulkarni) — a popular politician based in Maharashtra who has his eyes set on Delhi — slips into comatose after falling prey to a failed assassination attack.
Soon begins a nasty chase for the powerful position between his children, Ashish Rao Gaikwad (Siddharth Chandekar) and Poornima Rao Gaikwad (Priya Bapat). While the hot-headed Ashish had always assumed himself as the rightful heir after his father, Poornima strongly believes that she is more sincere, devoted, and deserving for the position.
Meanwhile, the secondary storylines of a police officer Wasim Khan (Eijaz Khan), a call centre operator called Gautam (Vishwas Kini), and a prostitute named Katrina (Vishwas Kini) play in the background.

With City of Dreams, the National Award-winning writer-director Nagesh Kukunoor (Iqbal) is taking on a genre — political thriller — he hasn't attempted before, as he said so himself in a statement last week. The Hotstar series deals with dynasty politics, an Indian tradition that goes beyond the country's independence from British rule, through the lens of two siblings vying for control in the wake of an assassination attempt on their father. And with the 2019 general election in full force, City of Dreams — set in Mumbai, whose nickname it borrows, and out Friday on Hotstar — seems set to ride the political wave that's going around India.
