Kate (Charlotte Rampling) and Geoff (Tom Courtenay) have decided to celebrate their 45 years of togetherness with a small party with their loved ones.
Just a week before the big day, Geoff receives a letter from Germany informing him that Katya’s body has been recovered — frozen and well preserved.
Caught off guard with the news, Geoff is unable to process his emotions. The horrifying memory of Katya, his then-girlfriend, slipping into a fissure during the walking tour is haunting his heart and mind.
As the week unfolds, Geoff’s uneasiness escalates. A vicious cycle of avoiding people, isolating, revisiting the attic with souvenirs from their time together, and fixating on the dilemma of visiting Germany to see her for the last time, begins.
Meanwhile, Kate is juggling between the preparations for the party.
Although she knew about Kate — except for the fact that the couple pretended to be married at that time to get accommodation — she is shocked at Geoff’s response.
As the big day grows closer, the incident begins to impact their relationship, as well as their individuality.
The romantic drama is based on Mauritian filmmaker David Constantine’s short story, "In Another Country".
