Uber has expanded its footprint in India by launching its services in Kochi - which becomes the 11th city in the country that the popular taxi and ridesharing service has a presence in.

The US-based startup that allows users to hire cars via its mobile app, had started its services in India with a launch in Bengaluru in August last year.

"In a multi-faceted city like Kochi where transportation alternatives are few and far between, Uber is truly everyone's private driver - bringing its hassle-free, safe, reliable, and affordable transportation to every local and tourist in town," noted Uber's official blog post.

The company says that during its initial phase for Kochi, there will be limited number of cars available, so the estimated time for arrival of the ride will be longer, but added it is "working hard to add cars and deliver the ultimate Uber experience in Kochi."

As a part of the promotional offer till December 15, consumers can use the promo code 'UberKochiLaunch' to enjoy two free rides up to Rs. 300 each.

Last week, the company launched its new low-cost UberGo service in India, claiming it to be the "cheapest ride in town" with fares even lower than an auto rickshaw.

The new UberGo service was announced to be available in all cities where Uber offers its services - namely Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune.
