A few Android and iOS Twitter app users are reportedly seeing a new option to 'mute' accounts. The 'mute' feature offers an option to hide an account's tweets from the Twitter feed; without unfollowing the account. However, the 'mute' function allows direct messages (DM) and notifications (through tagging) from the muted account.
Notably, Tweetdeck and Tweetbot apps, which are social media dashboard apps for management of Twitter accounts, have had the option of 'mute accounts' for a while.
It is expected that the official Twitter app (Android and iOS) for mobiles will get the 'mute' feature in upcoming updates, notes the Next Web. For those unaware, Twitter bought TweetDeck in 2011.
A Twitter user named @missambear has also posted a screenshot showing the mute account feature.

Unfortunately, Costolo has not detailed much more about the 'whisper mode' feature. We are yet to hear official word on both mute and whisper mode features from Twitter.
Recently, Twitter reported lacklustre user and usage growth for the second consecutive quarter. The San Francisco-based company announced it had 255 million monthly users who on an average appeared to check the service less frequently than a year ago.
