Skype has
updated its iPhone and iPad apps bringing some new features to the devices. The update brings automatic call recovery for dropped calls, which will enable the apps to automatically redial a number/contact in case of a call drop due to poor Wi-Fi reception. However, the app only makes a single redial attempt.
Following the update, the iPhone app now routes emergency calls through its native dialler. The iPad app now sports an improved user interface allowing a simple swipe from the left of the screen to see recent conversations in a sidebar. The update also brings in improved spacing and minor UI changes for the iPad mini screen size.
The update also fixes certain issues related to timestamps of received chat messages, and crashes while using the group chat feature. It has also resolved problems with picture previews when users send or receive them, users not receiving audio when outgoing call is established in background mode, and users not being able to end calls when they've logged in on multiple devices with the same account.
Skype was in the news recently after Microsoft
announced that it will retire its live messenger service in favour of Skype. Microsoft sent out emails to all Live messenger (or simply Messenger as Microsoft sometimes likes to call it) confirming that they will be migrated to Skype on 15 March and the service will be shutdown in all countries except China, the same day. Microsoft had acquired Skype in May 2011 and has been looking at ways to integrate the popular service with its own offerings.
Earlier, Skype had
updated its Windows and Mac clients to bring integration with Facebook and Microsoft networks. Skype 6.0 allowed users to sign in with their Facebook or Microsoft accounts, without the need to create a Skype account. It also added the ability to chat with contacts from Windows Live Messenger, Hotmail and Outlook.com.
