Skype to Soon Display Chat Notifications on Active Device Only

Microsoft on Wednesday has announced an improvement to its chat message notification synchronising for its Skype applications across all devices. The 'active endpoint' feature is currently rolling out and should become available globally 'over the next few weeks.' For the feature to work, users need to update their Skype apps across devices to the latest version available.

The feature essentially ensures that the Skype notifications will only be received by the device that is currently being used actively, even if the user have logged-in to multiple devices at the same time, although the chat history will continue to sync across all devices. Also Skype call notifications will still be sent to all devices.

"If you are signed in to Skype on multiple devices (a laptop, tablet and a smartphone) and you are sending chat messages to a group of friends from your tablet. Skype will only send new message notifications to your tablet and not to any of your other devices. All of your other devices will remain blissfully silent," explained company in blog post.

Additionally, if the user is not actively utilising any of the devices logged-in to Skype, all devices will receive the chat message notifications. The feature seems useful, but it is not known whether Microsoft will serve it as an optional feature or not.

Previously, the Redmond giant had added free group calling feature to its Skype app for modern Windows, also meant for Windows tablets and two-in-one hybrids. The app is supported to Windows 8.1 devices. With the updated Skype modern Windows app, users can call up to 10 people for free. Earlier the feature was only available to Skype Premium subscribers.
