Microsoft has announced an updated Skype app for its newly launched Windows Phone 8.1, and an improved version of Skype for Windows 8.1 Update, at San Francisco on Wednesday during the Microsoft Build 2014 event.

With the newly launched Windows Phone 8.1 OS, the users now have an extra option to convert a regular call in to a Skype video call. Users can preview this feature on the app currently in the Windows Phone Store.

"We know Skype users feel most connected to their friends and family when they can see their faces. For the first time on mobile, you can easily upgrade your regular phone calls to Skype video calls," states the official Skype blog.

Additionally, the Skype service will come with deeper integration with the Windows Phone 8.1's latest virtual voice assistant, Cortana.

Cortana can now be used to quickly start and end calls using voice commands. A simple voice command, for instance "Skype, get Lara Kingwell on video", will start the Skype app, search for the particular person, and make a call. It has been noted that Cortana will come included with the Skype for Windows Phone 8.1 update in the coming months.

In addition to the Cortana integration, Skype for WP8.1 will arrive with some more features like:

-Being always on to help users stay connected with the people who matter most, giving them real time notifications and updates on the Live Tile.

-People hub, allowing users to video call those closest to them directly through the contacts.

-Video Instant Messaging, letting users stay in contacts with the people they care about most, even when the call receivers are offline.

-HD 720p video calling.

-Navigation through the app using the beautiful modern user interface.

Along with Windows Phone 8.1, Skype has also announced some improvements for the existing Windows 8.1 OS. As a part of the Windows 8.1 Update, the built-in Skype app can now be pinned to the taskbar or Start screen, making it easily accessible. One can simply "hold down or right click on the Skype tile and select Pin to Taskbar."

Last month, Skype updated is app for Windows 8.1, focussing on better integration and synchronisation across varied devices, and fluent picking up of calls. Moreover, the company said said that "Skype calls will sync up wherever you choose to take the call from," whether it is via the Outlook account, mobile app, desktop or tablet.
