Opera Coast 4.0 Released With Data Compression and Curated News Feed

Opera released a major update to its Coast browser for iOS. The company brought popular features from its Opera Mini browser to Coast in the latest update. The biggest feature to be added to Opera Coast 4.0 is Opera Turbo. This feature compresses Web pages so that users can save on data charges. The feature is useful for those on limited data plans or slow connections and was only available in Opera Mini and Opera's desktop browsers until now.

Another big feature that has made its way to Opera's Coast browser is the Discover news feed. This feed features curated news from various portals and has been available on Opera's desktop browser and Opera Mini for some time.

"Great content is what drives the web, and also what should drive a great web browser, and that's what the latest edition of Opera Coast for iPhone, iPad and iPod achieves," Huib Kleinhout, Product Manager for Opera Coast, said.

Opera Coast also gets a new custom share button, which allows users to share content to popular social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, apart from messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Line. If you're reading an article on Safari browser, you can tap the share button and open it on Opera Coast too. This may sound redundant but some apps may only open links in Safari and that might inconvenience those who use Coast as their primary browser. This feature lets them switch quickly.

With the Opera Coast update, the browser now supports Apple's Handoff feature. This means that you can open a website on Opera Coast for iPhone and continue reading it on your iPad or Opera for Mac. The browser has also added support for landscape mode on iPhones and is now optimised for iPhone 6 Plus.

Earlier, Opera had unveiled a major update to its Opera Mini browser, adding a video compression feature that allowed users to watch videos with minimal buffering. We had played several YouTube videos on both Opera Mini 9 and Safari on a 2G connection, and noticed that videos played with far fewer buffering stops in Opera Mini. This feature is not yet available on Opera Coast, but one can hope that it will make its way across some time in the future.
