The US space agency Nasa has launched a new colouring book app to make children aware of how rockets are launched.

The free educational app, called LSP Activity Book, lets kids learn about the mission planning process and the precise measurements behind creating the right kind of launch vehicle.

The app is named after Nasa's Launch Services Programme (LSP), which prepares unmanned spacecraft for launch. LSP is located at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and acts as a broker to match payloads with specific launch vehicles for customers to ensure mission success.

The LSP Activity Book app has a character named Peter the Payload that guides kids through the online colouring activity book.

Children can colour 24 Nasa pictures with their choice of 14 colours and several different colouring methods.

A crossword teaches children about the solar system, and an "asteroid maze" mimics asteroid belts that spacecraft navigate.

Nasa's educational app provides feedback when some activities are completed, and kids can get a certificate of achievement once they "complete the mission" and make it through the whole activity book.

The LSP Activity Book app is available for Android and iOS users on Google Play and the App Store respectively.

The app's listing page description reads, "Come color with Peter the Payload as your tour guide on an interactive Nasa adventure from Payload Processing through Liftoff! Unleash your inner artist as you explore the Launch Services Program (LSP) Activity Book. "
