Maps and location-based services company, MapmyIndia has launched Explore, an app that offers information on point of interests around the user's location, for Windows Phone 8 smartphones.

The MapmyIndia Explore app is a free download and will help users find useful places of interest including ATMs, restaurants, petrol pumps, hospitals, among others, around them.

The Explore app also offers listings in a city-guide format across three categories: eat and drink, places to see and places to stay, with detailed information and pictures in addition to a showcase section that highlights some popular places.

The app also offers a social interface allowing users to pin favourite hangouts, rate and review popular places around their location and follow other "Explorers" (users). Users can also see an activity feed of what others are doing on the Explore app. It offers integration with Facebook allowing users to log in with their Facebook accounts. Photos, reviews and subscription to places are cross posted to users' Facebook timeline.

"The Explore app further reinforces our commitment to bring to the users apps that are helpful as well as fun to have. It is a culmination of an exciting partnership between MapmyIndia and Microsoft. This social-navigation app is the third in the series of apps we have launched for the Windows 8 platform. The Locate app and Real-time traffic on MapmyIndia maps have generated an overwhelming user response on both Windows and Android platforms. We will soon make 'Explore' available to Android users," said, Rakesh Verma, Managing Director, MapmyIndia.

In September, MapmyIndia had launched realtime traffic updates on its free MapmyIndia app on Windows Phone, Windows 8 and Android platforms, allowing users to look at traffic situation in real time and plan routes accordingly.
