Apple is testing a new feature in iOS 10 that will warn users when water enters the Lightning port. A warning pops up on the iPhone screen when an accessory is inserted into the affected Lightning port.

The feature is seen on the latest beta version 3 of iOS 10, and seems to be functional only for iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone SE users for now. It was first spotted by Engadget, and the feature essentially detects moisture and warns the user about it, before any deeper damage occurs.

If there is any liquid inside the port, the iPhone running on iOS 10 beta will warn the user to disconnect the Lightning accessory. The warning reads, "Liquid has been detected in the Lightning connector. To protect your iPhone, disconnect this iPhone accessory, and allow the connector to dry."

There is also an option to ignore the warning if the user prefers to do so. This feature has also been demoed in a video by YouTube channel EverythingApplePro, and it shows just how it works on an iPhone. After the accessory was inserted, the iPhone took a while to detect the liquid and pop the warning up. However, let's not forget that the feature is still in beta, and a much more polished version will probably be released with the final iOS 10 version in September.

The new software version will release alongside the iPhone 7, and promises to bring a host of new features and improvements. The iMessage app bags several new social features, Siri has been beefed up with APIs that finally allow it to control third-party apps, and even Photos app has now got deep learning to identify and classify people and objects in photos. Apple Music has been completely redesigned, Apple Maps has got an overhaul, and HomeKit is going to be introduced as a standalone app.
