Google's Play Store has achieved yet another milestone. The search giant claims that its store is now offering over 700,000 apps.

It's noteworthy that, based on the last set of numbers officially shared, Apple too is currently offering the same number of apps via its App Store.

Though reaching the milestone of 700,000 applications is big achievement for any operating system, some people are not taking this numbers wars seriously. With no approval process for apps before they make their way on to the Play Store, one tends to find a lot of half-baked apps, and others that are just wrappers around the mobile version of some websites. Contrast this to the App Store where at least some level of check is done before an app is approved, and, thus, the quality of the apps tends to be higher.

With the number of apps now equal, how about app downloads? In September, Google had announced over 25 billion downloads via its Play Store. On the other hand, Apple announced at the iPad Mini event last week that so far 35 billion apps have been downloaded from its App Store.

In a bid to further increase Android adoption, Google on Monday introduced its Nexus 4 smartphone that is being manufactured by LG Electronics. It runs on the latest version of Android version 4.2 and comes with a 4.7-inch screen. Apart from this smartphone, Google also marked its presence in the 10-inch tablet market with the launch of Nexus 10. This tablet has a resolution of 2560x1600 pixels and will be available for $399.
