Dropbox Finally Announces Apps for Windows Phone and Windows Tablets

Alongside the surprise move of Microsoft collaborating with Dropbox for Office integration, the cloud storage company on Tuesday announced that it would finally be releasing apps for Windows Phone and Windows (RT) tablets soon, something that was glaringly missing from the platforms.

The firm however did not mention the exact date as to when it will launch the Dropbox app for Windows Phone and Windows tablet users. "We'll also be releasing a Dropbox app for Windows Phone and Windows tablet users in the coming months," stated the firm on its blog post.

Until Dropbox launches its official app on Windows Store and Windows Phone Store, users would have continue to make use of third-party apps like CloudSix for Dropbox to access their Dropbox accounts.

As a part of the newly announced partnership between Microsoft and Dropbox, Office users would be able to access their Dropbox accounts from Office apps and edit files from the Dropbox app. Sharing links with other users will also be possible.

Microsoft said the Dropbox integration would be included in the next updates to the Office mobile apps. The firm added that the updates will be rolled out to users in the next few weeks, and that online accessibility would only be available in the first half of 2015.

The Redmond giant already has a file-sharing service called OneDrive, but partnering with Dropbox will allow it to tap more than 200 million users of the Silicon Valley startup's services.

Microsoft has been looking make its OneDrive offering more attractive than cloud storage services from rivals like Google and Amazon, and to that end last week removed storage limits for Office 365 subscribers (Home, Personal, and University). Users will be able to access and upload content to OneDrive via desktop PC or mobile devices.
