BitTorrent on Tuesday announced version 2.0 of its Sync platform alongside a premium subscription.
Sync is a P2P file sharing service that lets users securely sync and shares files and folders across multiple devices without the need for them to go through third party servers. The service was first made public in April 2013.
The BitTorrent Sync 2.0 app features an enhanced user interface for both desktop and mobile platforms, better security with greater control, and a Pro version that is made keeping Business workgroups in mind. Both desktop and mobile versions of the app feature several improvements, with some common ones being the ability to link all of your devices together using a private identity; to approve a person only once to connect to a folder you shared once; pause syncing for individual folders; delete the folder from file system when disconnecting from it, and more. Improvements to the desktop version include the ability to sort columns in the folder list.
Mobile improvements include the ability to clear synced files for a folder to free up space, cancel pending file transfers, backing up to a linked device in 2 clicks, change which devices you back up to at any time, as well as a new Peer List per folder.
The Pro version of Sync 2.0 by BitTorrent lets users link all their devices together and access to shared folders, and also lets them share files in the terabyte range. The version lets users set up access to on-demand folders "letting you view the contents of a folder and only consume the files you need." The company claims the feature save a good amount of storage space from the users' devices, while giving them access to the same.
Users can also control folder ownership and permissions any time via a simple dropdown menu seen in the Peer list. This lets the owners control which folders should be read only and which both read and write. A complete list of changes in version 2.0 can be found here.
The Pro version of Sync 2.0 by BitTorrent is available at $39.99 per year. The firm also gives discount for those who buy more licences for their firms. The free users would also get access to Pro features but only for 30 days.
Users can download and use BitTorrent Sync 2.0 for Windows, Mac, Free BSD, and Linux from the company page, and Android and iOS from the respective app stores.
