Amazon Prime users in the US can now access Amazon's Instant Video service on their Android devices by downloading the updated Amazon app from Google Play. After installing the app on their Android devices, users would have to download the Prime Instant Video player via the Amazon Appstore in order to view videos.
"Prime members in the US can enjoy unlimited Prime Instant Video from within the Amazon app by downloading the Prime Instant Video player, delivered exclusively via the Amazon Appstore," states the Amazon in the app's What's New section on Google Play.
Notably, the Amazon Instant Video service was until now available only for Amazon Prime users, on the web, on Amazon Fire phone, and Apple iPhone and iPad devices.
The updated Amazon app on Android also gives users access to Amazon's full digital catalogue including all the apps available in the Amazon Appstore - essentially removing the need to sideload the Amazon Appstore for Android app, which gives Android device users access to the company's app store.
As a part of its Android update, Amazon is also offering users 5GB of free photo back-up with Amazon Cloud Drive.
Amazon on Tuesday slashed the price of its Fire Phone (Review) handset from $199 to $1 for US customers opting for a two-year contract with AT&T. Reports also indicate that similar options will be available in Germany for EUR 1 through Deutsche Telekom and in Britain for no upfront cost in partnership with the carrier O2. Notably, Amazon also trimmed the cost of the smartphone without a contract to $449, from $649 at the launch.
No sales figures for the phone have been disclosed, but Amazon is facing a fiercely competitive environment and a pending launch of a new line of iPhone from Apple.
