The DTH service arm of India's leading telecom operator, Bharti Airtel, has announced the launch of a mobile app called Airtel Pocket TV for its digital TV subscribers.

The Airtel Pocket TV app is available as a free download on Google Play store for devices running Android 2.1 or above, and an iOS version is expected soon. Notably, on the Play Store, the Pocket TV app is listed as compatible with devices running Android 2.2 and above. Previously the company had an app for scheduling recording on its set-top boxes, which is now replaced by the Pocket TV app.

The Pocket TV app is similar to the app launched by rivals DishTV and TataSky in the recent past, which are already available for Android as well as for iOS users.

According to Airtel, the Pocket TV app enables subscribers to watch live content and their favourite TV programs on the go. It is loaded with over 150 live TV channels and offers more than 10,000 hours of video content. It also lets users watch earlier episodes on more than 13 channels, however the service is limited to existing Airtel Digital television subscribers and customers will have to subscribe to the service by paying Rs. 60 a month.

Once users install the app, they will have to activate the service by sending the SMS to 54325 from their registered mobile number. The app additionally lets users set alarms for shows, filter channels and videos by genre. It provides access to the programing guide, and favourite channels. Users can see the list of the top viewed, newly added and top rated content from the recommendation zone.

The other two mobile TV apps available from DTH providers are DishOnline and Tata Sky Mobile.
