Want to get all the best apps without emptying your wallet? In our series, we search through all the different app stores to find the best deals for mobile, tablet and PC users. This week, there's a good selection of games, password management tools, and even comic books. Here's the list:
1. Star Horizon
This great looking 3D space fighting game has smooth controls and amazing graphics. The game itself looks like a flying game but it's really more of a shooting gallery - your movement is on rails, though within that you have to dodge to avoid enemy shots and dangerous hazards like asteroids. Buttons on the left side of the screen handle your weapons, while you can use the rest of the screen to control movement. There's no in-app spending here - you pay a flat fee and get to play the game, but despite the gorgeous visuals, the game itself is a little shallow, so your enjoyment will depend on how much you like the genre.
iOS (usually Rs. 240, is Rs. 120), Android (usually Rs. 220, is Rs. 110)
2. 1Password
The well-known and highly popular password manager 1Password has gone free for now. A password manager is a great way of keeping track of multiple, difficult passwords. Instead of having to remember all your passwords, you store them in 1password, and need only to remember the password for the app.
It also comes with a built in browser, where you can store your credit card details as well as login information safely, and the app can autofill these for you.
iOS (usually Rs. 600, is free), Android (free with in-app purchase to unlock features)
3. Fieldrunners 2
Fieldrunners 2 is one of the best tower defence games for the iPhone iPad, and it has gone free for a limited time only. There are versions of the game for Android, and Blackberry, but those are all at full price; only the iOS version has seen a price cut. The game has been at the forefront of the TD genre, and couples this with a fun style with great visuals and audio, and shouldn't be missed.
There is also a version called Fieldrunners 2 HD Free, which could cause some confusion, but that's a demo to give you a taste of the full game. You cannot unlock all levels and abilities on Fieldrunners 2 HD Free, so make sure that the app you download is named Fieldrunners 2 HD, or Fieldrunners 2.
iPad (usually Rs. 300, is free), iPhone (usually Rs. 190, is free)
4. Humble Indie Bundle 12
The Humble Indie Bundle is a great way to build up your game collection, discover Indie hits, and save a lot of money as well. The bundle follows a pay what you want model, so you can buy three great games for as little as $0.01 (under Rs. 1), although paying more than average (around $7 (Rs. 426) at the time of writing) will get you access to at least six more games. More games tend to be added over time, so if you're looking for the most bang for your buck you should get in early. If you pay more than $10, then you also get early access to Prison Architect. Some of the amazing games in the latest bundle include Steamworld Dig, Papers Please, Luftrausers, Gone Home and Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine. These are superstar titles, and frankly, worth more than the MRP of $171 (Rs. 10,430), and if you haven't played these games already, don't miss the bundle.
PC (Pay what you want. Total value is $171 (Rs. 10,430), Pay $10 (Rs. 609) to unlock everything)
5. BusyBox - Time spent tracker and multi task keeper
BusyBox is a very simple app that just lets you save timer logs with categories and notes to describe what you were doing. You could just use the built in timer and make notes if you wanted to, but BusyBox makes it simple.
At the end of the day, you could look at all the entries with the category coffee break, for example, to see how much time was actually wasted today. And it can be useful to keep track of how you work through the day so that you can more carefully manage your time moving forward.
iOS (usually Rs. 190, is free)
